Pune, 22nd May 2021: A postdoctoral research scientist, who is from Pune developed a 3D model of lungs to study the impact of the Covid-19 disease. Dr Mulay studied how SARS-Co-2 affects the human lungs using her expertise in model development.

Dr Mulay is currently based in the United States; she’s a research scientist at the Lung and Regenerative Medicine Institutes at Cedar-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles, USA.

She developed a 3D model in the laboratory by growing human alveoli by growing stem cells from patients’ lung samples. And she also undertook patient-oriented research to understand the various lung diseases. She studied many antiviral drugs including Remdesivir to get a better understanding of how it functions when consumed. This proved crucial to understanding how it damages the lung cells and how the infection affects the lungs and is not able to maintain oxygen levels and patients die of this deadly virus.

Almost as soon as SARS-CoV-2 was discovered, research groups worldwide started probing its biology, while others developed diagnostic tests or investigated public-health measures to control it. Scientists also raced to find treatments and create vaccines that could bring the pandemic under control.
