Pune: PCMC Commissioner Orders To Create Water Reduction Strategy
Pimpri, 30th March 2023: Pavana Dam, which supplies water to Pimpri-Chinchwad city, has sufficient water storage to last till August. However, due to the influence of El Niño, weather scientists have predicted the possibility of much less than average rainfall in the upcoming monsoon season. Therefore, a water reduction strategy should be prepared.
Municipal commissioner and administrator Shekhar Singh gave instructions to prepare a plan for water supply. A special meeting of the Water Supply Department was held under the chairmanship of Commissioner Singh, keeping in mind the water requirement of the city. It was accompanied by City Engineer Shrikant Sawane, Executive Engineer Ramnath Takale, Ajay Suryavanshi, DD Patil, and other officials.
The population of Pimpri-Chinchwad is approximately 30 lakhs. At present, 575 million litres of water are being supplied daily. However, if the rainfall decreases in the future, the remaining water storage in Pavana Dam will be taken into account till the end of October. Accordingly, it was discussed in the meeting that it is necessary to plan the water supply till the end of June 2024. Planning will be done accordingly.
Conducting municipal and private borewell surveys and their repair, collecting information regarding the acquisition of bores and wells as required, determining water reduction policy, and making rainwater harvesting mandatory, and various other measures will be taken to prevent water leakage. After pumping 100 million litres of water per day from Andhra Dam to Nighoj and supplying water from the new centre at Chikhli, the water deficit of about 100 million litres will be filled. Along with this, the meeting discussed the measures to be taken to speed up the project to withdraw 165 million litres of water from the Bhama Askhed Dam.
