Pune, 25th November 2025: Patient care at the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)–run Kamala Nehru Hospital has deteriorated to such an extent that several patients are now being shifted to Sassoon General Hospital due to delays in treatment. Taking cognisance of the situation, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved Rs 13 crore in the first phase to upgrade health services, strengthen staffing, and increase the availability of doctors.

The hospital, which caters largely to economically weaker families who cannot afford private healthcare, is also attached to the municipal medical college. Citizens expect full medical services to be available under one roof, but the present state of the hospital has raised serious concerns.

While departments operating under the public–private partnership (PPP) model are functioning relatively well, the rest of the hospital is suffering from poor-quality infrastructure. Plumbing, electrical systems, wall maintenance, and even essential medical equipment have degraded significantly. During a recent inspection, Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishor Ram found several machines out of order.

Following the inspection, the Commissioner convened a meeting with the health, construction, and administrative departments. A proposal of Rs 13 crore was tabled for a comprehensive overhaul of the hospital—covering new equipment, major repairs, structural improvements, and immediate modernisation of patient facilities.

Officials said another Rs 25 crore will be allocated in the next phase for further upgrades.

The hospital is also struggling with an acute shortage of doctors, nurses, and essential medical staff. Due to the current salary range of Rs 45,000 to Rs 60,000, very few specialists are willing to take up positions. To address this, PMC is exploring the possibility of offering salaries between Rs 80,000 and Rs 2 lakh for expert doctors using municipal funds, Commissioner Ram said.
