Pune, October 20, 2020: Under the Abhay Yojana being implemented by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for property tax arrears, 24,460 property owners have paid tax of Rs 55.52 crore. On Monday (October 19), 1,981 property owners deposited Rs 5.91 crore in a single day, the tax collection department of the PMC informed.

The PMC has decided to implement a property tax protection scheme for the recovery of arrears. Abhay Yojana will continue till November 30 for the property owners who have arrears of up to Rs 50 lakh. After the commencement of the scheme, 24,460 property owners have paid tax of Rs 55.52 crore. Considering the interest relief on arrears, total relief of Rs 25.66 crore has been given to these property owners.

To make it easier to pay property tax, the Citizen Facilitation Center under the concerned ward office of the PMC will be kept open from 10 am to 4 pm from Monday to Friday. Cheques and cash will be accepted at the centre on Saturdays and Sundays at fixed times. Apart from this, it will also be possible to pay taxes online.

What is the scheme?

Penalties and fines are levied on arrears of the property taxpayers. As a result, property tax arrears have increased significantly. Under this scheme, 80 percent relief has been given in the amount of 2 percent penalty which is levied on arrears every month. The arrears of mobile towers have been excluded from the scheme.

Vilas Kanade, head of Taxation and Tax collection department, has appealed to as many citizens as possible to avoid future action by paying property tax arrears under the scheme.

Rs 903 crore income from property tax

Rs 903 crore has been deposited to the Municipal Corporation from the property tax received under Abhay Yojana and the tax paid earlier. “Out of 10.1 lakh property owners in the city, 6,08,655 property owners have paid taxes”, said Kanade.
