Pune: PMC Pushes Three-Acre Garden Project in Undri, Sets One-Year Completion Timeline

Undri, 10th September 2026: The proposed development of a three-acre public garden near Nyati Esteban Phase 1 in Undri has received a significant push after Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishor Ram inspected the site on Thursday afternoon and directed civic officials to expedite the work.

The proposed garden is expected to provide much-needed open and green space to residents of Undri and the surrounding areas, which have witnessed rapid residential and commercial development in recent years. With large-scale construction increasing across the Undri-Mohamadwadi belt, residents have been raising concerns over the limited availability of public gardens, recreational spaces and areas for outdoor activities.

During his inspection, Commissioner Ram reviewed the condition of the proposed garden plot and instructed the concerned civic officials to speed up the initial work. He specifically directed officials to undertake cleaning and levelling of the site on priority.

Ram said the development of the garden would provide residents with an important recreational facility amid the area’s growing urbanisation. The open space is expected to offer residents an opportunity to walk, relax, spend time outdoors and undertake activities related to health and fitness.

Residents’ organisation has been pursuing the project

Members of the Mohamadwadi Undri Residents Welfare Development Foundation (MURWDF) were present during the commissioner’s visit. Renuka Suryavanshi, Suniel Aiyer, Sandeep Kolhatkar and Nadim Inamdar represented the residents’ organisation and discussed the proposed development with the civic authorities.

MURWDF has been following up with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for the development of the plot as a public garden.

The organisation had first raised the proposal with the PMC Commissioner in August 2025. At that time, residents suggested that the proposed garden be named ‘Sindoor Vatika’.

The residents had argued that developing the plot as a garden would help address the shortage of open spaces in Undri and Mohamadwadi and provide local citizens with a dedicated area for recreation and greenery.

The civic administration had earlier assured residents that the plot could be developed as a recreational facility. The latest inspection by the commissioner has now given fresh momentum to the proposal.

One-year deadline for completion

One of the key developments during Thursday’s visit was the one-year timeline set by Commissioner Ram for completion of the garden project.

The commissioner directed officials to first complete the cleaning and levelling work and then proceed with the remaining development activities without unnecessary delay.

According to Ram, once the preliminary work is completed, the development of the garden should not require considerable time. The directions are expected to accelerate the process, which residents have been following up on for more than a year.

Residents are now awaiting the start of the groundwork and implementation of the project according to the timeline announced by the civic administration.

Residents offer support for plantation

MURWDF members also suggested that the residents and PMC could work together to increase greenery at the site.

The residents have expressed their willingness to support plantation activities by contributing to the planting of saplings once the site is ready. The proposed plantation drive could help increase the green cover of the area and contribute to creating a healthier public environment.

Residents said that community participation could also help in maintaining the greenery and ensuring that the proposed garden develops into a useful public asset for the locality.

Growing demand for open spaces

Undri and Mohamadwadi have undergone substantial urban growth, with numerous residential projects and other developments coming up in the area. While the growth has increased housing and commercial facilities, residents have also highlighted the need for corresponding civic infrastructure, particularly public gardens and open spaces.

The proposed three-acre garden could therefore become an important addition to the area’s civic infrastructure.

Once completed, the garden is expected to provide residents with space for walking, relaxation, recreation, outdoor activities and plantation. It could also offer families, senior citizens and children a dedicated public space away from the increasingly congested built-up environment.

Commissioner inspects RMC plants

During the same visit, Commissioner Naval Kishor Ram also inspected RMC plants in the area.

He directed the concerned facilities to follow the applicable government rules and regulations. The commissioner also warned that stern action would be taken against units found violating government norms.

The inspection comes as part of the PMC’s efforts to ensure that such facilities operating in the area comply with the required regulations.

Residents await action on the ground

With the commissioner now directing officials to expedite the project and complete the garden within one year, residents of Undri and Mohamadwadi are hopeful that the proposal will finally move towards implementation.

MURWDF members said they are prepared to cooperate with the PMC, particularly in plantation and efforts to increase greenery at the site.

The immediate priority will now be cleaning and levelling the three-acre plot, followed by the actual development of the garden. Residents will be closely watching the progress of the project and expect the PMC to adhere to the one-year completion timeline announced during the commissioner’s inspection.

If completed as planned, ‘Sindoor Vatika’ could become a significant public green space for Undri and Mohamadwadi residents, providing much-needed relief from the area’s rapidly expanding concrete landscape.
