Pune: PMC Evacuates Around 100 Residents from Ektanagari as Flood Rescue Operations Continue; Khadakwasla Dam Discharge Reduced

Pune, 31st July 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) launched a large-scale rescue operation in Ektanagari on Friday after continuous rainfall and heavy water discharge from the Khadakwasla Dam triggered flood-like conditions along the Mutha River.

Around 100 residents from 40 families living in Jal Poojan Apartment, Sharda Society, Dwarka, and Anand Park were safely evacuated and shifted to a temporary shelter set up at a nearby badminton hall.

By 5 pm, the Khadakwasla Dam had reached full storage capacity, and water was being released into the Mutha River at 43,571 cusecs, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying riverside areas. The Khadakwasla catchment recorded 56.60 mm of rainfall between 8 am and 5 pm.

Following reports of rising water levels, officials and staff from the Sinhagad Road Ward Office, along with engineers and disaster management teams, rushed to the affected area.

The evacuation and rescue operation was carried
out under the supervision of the PMC’s Assistant Commissioner and Incident Commander, with coordinated support from multiple civic departments.

The PMC’s Disaster Management Cell has been kept operational round the clock. Teams from the Fire Brigade, Road Department, Drainage Department, Electrical Department, and regional offices remain deployed to monitor the situation. The civic body is also maintaining continuous coordination with the India Meteorological Department (IMD), C-DAC, the District Collector’s Office, Traffic Police, and the Water Resources Department.

Following the directions of the Municipal Commissioner, flood-affected areas have been reviewed, and additional shelter centres have been kept ready in case further evacuations become necessary. The PMC has established 49 relief centres across flood-prone locations in Pune city.

The civic body has warned that if water discharge from the dam increases again, areas such as Warje Tapodham, Patil Estate, Pulachi Wadi, and Rajput Vasti could face flooding. Citizens have been advised to remain alert, avoid entering the riverbed, and strictly follow official instructions.

Update: The Water Resources Department reduced the discharge from Khadakwasla Dam to 16,247 cusecs from 10:30 pm, providing some relief. However, authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious as rainfall continues and the situation is being closely monitored.
