Pune, October 27, 2020: A few years back, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had made an effort to bring the ‘bicycle’ era back in the city, although it restored the love for the ‘two-wheeler’ partially, it didn’t spring its use by the public. The civic administration is now planning to launch an ‘e-bike’ scheme which will be implemented in different parts of Pune, in order to enable more options to travel for the citizens, stated PMC’s road department standing committee.

An agency has submitted a proposal to the civic administration for this project, according to which the administration is planning to make e-bikes available in 500 places. The bikes will be parked on important roads, squares, IT parks, markets, malls, cinemas and other busy places in the city. Parking spaces will be fixed and charging facilities will also be provided. The standing committee had sought the opinion of the road department regarding this scheme. The department has given its opinion to the standing committee that there seems no problem in implementing the scheme in Pune.

Bicycles were also made available at nominal rates at various places in the city under the cycle scheme. However, some bicycles were stolen and many were sold for scrap. The cycle sharing scheme was blown up. Therefore, it is to be observed whether the e-bike scheme will be successful or not.

“The standing committee has been informed that the e-bike scheme can be implemented in the city. However, the scheme is in its infancy and a strategic decision will be taken in the standing committee and the general assembly,” said VG Kulkarni, Head of the Road Department.
