Pune, 11th September 2021: The Property Tax Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started work three months in advance for the recovery of arrears of property tax. So far, the department has issued notices to 9,000 properties and 10 properties have been sealed.

Tax arrears are collected by the municipality in the month of November every year. However, the action began in August this year, said Vilas Kanade, head of the PMC tax department.

In the last few years, the municipal corporation’s property tax arrears have gone up to Rs 5,000 crore, of which, while the highest amount is Rs 2,000 crore for mobile companies, the rest is due to other property owners. Last year, the municipality had implemented Abhay Yojana for these owners. About 1.44 lakh property owners took advantage of it and paid arrears of around Rs 500 crore.

However, the PMC had expected these taxpayers to pay regular taxes this year, but only 50,000 of them have paid regular taxes. Therefore, the Municipal Corporation has undertaken a timely recovery campaign and independent squads have been deployed for this purpose.

Over the last month, these teams have started recovering arrears by meeting more than 9,000 property owners in person and issuing notices and so far about 10 properties have been sealed.

Kanade said that the PMC has so far received revenue of Rs 1,051 crore from property tax and the administration is making efforts to meet the targets set in the PMC’s budget.
