Pune, 6th May 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is likely to play a larger role in urban planning in the metropolitan region, with proposals to designate it as the planning authority for several town planning (TP) schemes currently under the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).

The move was discussed at a recent meeting of the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority, where officials noted that a significant portion of land under some of these schemes falls within PMC limits, making the civic body better placed to execute them.

Among the projects under consideration is the Maan–Mhalunge TP scheme, which received state government approval on April 29 after revisions. Originally presented as a model scheme in 2018, officials said its implementation may now be handed over to PMC given the extent of its jurisdiction in the area.

“The Maan–Mhalunge scheme largely falls within PMC limits, and it was felt that the corporation should take it up,” a senior official present at the meeting said.

Officials added that the state urban development department has already cleared four other TP schemes — Autade-Handewadi, two schemes in Holkarwadi, and Vadachiwadi — paving the way for their execution. However, the Manjari Khurd–Kolwadi scheme has been rejected due to technical issues related to plot demarcation and will need to be resubmitted after revisions.
