Pune: PMC Notice to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Health Dept Seeks Medical Records After Six-Year-Old Dies During Eye Surgery
Pune, 21st May 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s health department has sought medical records and treatment documents from Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital following the death of a six-year-old girl during a routine eye surgery procedure earlier this week.
Civic officials on Wednesday issued a notice to the hospital, directing it to submit all relevant case papers and medical details within 24 hours as part of the inquiry into the incident.
According to the girl’s family, the child had undergone surgeries for squint and cataract during infancy. The family later noticed deterioration in her vision and consulted a doctor in Shirur, where the doctor suspected glaucoma and referred the child to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital for further treatment.
The family claimed that all pre-operative tests had been completed and the child was declared fit for surgery scheduled on May 18. Within about half an hour after the child was taken to operation theatre, the family was informed that she had coughed up blood and suffered cardiac arrest, the family members said.
The child was shifted to the intensive care unit but was declared dead later in the morning. The family has lodged a complaint alleging medical negligence.
Senior police inspector Ulhas Kadam said statements of around 20 persons connected to the case were being recorded as part of the investigation.
