Pune, 22nd April 2023: Pune residents have succeeded in regaining the 40 percent property tax exemption of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) since 1970. However, in 2019, a new residential property of 1.67 lakh has been recorded in the city.

The PMC has given 40 percent property tax relief to citizens who own a house and live in that house themselves. The state government had taken away this concession and ordered to collect 100 percent tax from 2019. But due to this huge tax increase, it was getting hard for the Pune residents to pay the tax burden.

Finally, taking cognizance of the injustice done to the people of Pune, the state government decided to maintain the 40 percent discount. It has also been clarified that the tax amount of those who have been recovered will be adjusted in the subsequent bills.

Since 2019, 1.67 lakh new residential properties have been registered in the cities and 100 percent tax has been collected from these property holders. Reportedly, the Municipal Corporation has also clarified that this 40 percent discount will not be given to the property holders who are going to keep tenants in this new property.

Dr. Kunal Khemnar Additional Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation said, “Each property will be checked by the Municipal Corporation before starting the 40 percent discount. Also, to verify this information, the property rental agreement with the police, and the rental agreement with the Stamp Duty Department will be checked.”

Previous property tax returns are ready and there has been no change in that. Therefore, the ready bill with 40 percent discount can be printed and distributed from 1st May and it will be possible to collect the bill.

Citizens who have paid 40 percent recovery arrears, as well as those who are self-employed in the newly registered property of 1.67 lakh, will have to change their bill. But since this number is less, it will be possible for the Municipal Corporation to complete the proceedings in the next few days and distribute them in a revised manner.
