Pune: PMC Plans Underpass to Ease Mundhwa-Magarpatta Traffic Woes
Koregaon Park, 13th December 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed constructing an underpass to ease traffic congestion on the busy road stretch connecting Mundhwa to Magarpatta. The project, estimated to cost ₹67.3 crore, aims to address frequent traffic jams at key junctions such as Kad Vasti and Jehangir Chowk. The underpass will be developed on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis.
This underpass is the second such project proposed by the PMC in the Mundhwa area to combat increasing vehicular congestion. Earlier, the civic body initiated plans for an underpass at Mundhwa Chowk to improve access to the Kharadi bypass.
A senior PMC official stated, “We have conducted initial surveys for the proposed underpass at Kad Vasti junction. It will be located near Tadigutta Chowk, en route to Magarpatta. We are encouraging private developers to construct this underpass on a PPP and credit note model. Developers can later use the credit notes for other infrastructure projects.”
With the rapid residential and commercial growth in Nagar Road, Mundhwa, Magarpatta, and Hadapsar, traffic volumes have surged, creating bottlenecks. Flyovers and underpasses are seen as critical solutions to reduce travel time and improve road efficiency.
Residents in the area have long demanded solutions to the traffic snarls that plague major junctions like Mundhwa Chowk, Kad Vasti, and Tadigutta Chowk.
The PMC is also exploring additional measures to improve traffic flow, including widening key road stretches. “Some roads are already being widened. For example, PMC is working with the Defence Department to expand the road connecting Tadigutta Chowk to North Main Road. Similarly, encroachments near Mundhwa Junction were recently removed to create more space for vehicles,” a road department official said.
