Pune, 2nd November 2023: In a move to bolster property tax recovery efforts, the Pune Municipal Corporation has taken strict measures, resulting in the sealing of 40 properties within the city by the Taxation and Tax Collection Department on Wednesday. The accumulated arrears from these properties amount to ₹8.81 crore, 94 lakhs, and 999 rupees.

Simultaneously, the Municipal Corporation has sealed approximately 2,000 properties with arrears dating back to April 2023, amounting to ₹123.42 crore, 48 lakhs, and 903 rupees. Delays in bill issuance, caused by confusion surrounding a 40 per cent property tax discount for the current fiscal year, have led to bills reaching citizens of Pune approximately one and a half months later than usual.

This delay has contributed to ongoing confusion among citizens, resulting in the Municipal Corporation receiving only ₹1,500 crore in income thus far. The department had set a budget target of nearly ₹2,400 crore for the fiscal year. To make up for the income shortfall, a renewed focus on arrears recovery has been emphasized by the Municipal Corporation.

To this end, various systems have been deployed throughout the city, with PMC inspecting the records of 217 defaulters on Wednesday. Subsequently, notices were issued to 80 defaulters, and 40 properties were sealed. As a result of these enforcement actions, 97 property owners promptly paid ₹1.80 crore and 60 thousand 771 rupees in property tax.
