Pune: PMC staffs perform last rites as family members refuse to take body of Coronavirus positive woman

Pune, April 8, 2020: For three days Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials kept calling family members of a 60-year-old woman from Laxminagar, Yerwada, to take her body for cremation, but they didn’t turn up. Reason: She had died of Coronavirus.

The woman had earlier tested negative when she underwent treatment at Naidu hospital. She was discharged and sent home. Her condition deteriorated and she was taken to Sassoon Hospital on April 3. She was declared dead on arrival and swab was taken for testing. The report indicated she was Coronavirus positive. She had no foreign travel history.

Her body remained in the morgue for three days as nobody from her family was coming to take it away for cremation. Finally, PMC got the family give in writing that they will no objection if she is cremated by others. Accordingly, PMC nominated it’s staffs who performed the last rites and cremated her body.


5 more deaths due to Coronavirus in Pune, tally reaches 13

With five more deaths today due to Coronavirus COVID19, the total casualty due to the deadly virus has reached 13 in Pune. Also, the Coronavirus positive patients number has reached 167 today including 27 who have been cured and discharged.

Shekhar Gaikwad, Municipal Commissioner of Pune Municipal corporation (PMC) said that total death toll in the city has reached 13. The patients had co-morbid conditions.


According to officials, three patients died at Sassoon General Hospital while one each succumbed at Naidu Hospital and Noble Hospital.

According to Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India’s total number of Coronavirus positive cases has increased to 5194 (including 4643 active cases, 401 cured/discharged people and 149 deaths). There is increase of 773 new #COVID19 cases and 10 new deaths recorded in last 24 hours.
