Pune, 3rd December 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is working on a proposal to develop theme-based parks that will represent the culture and heritage of 29 Indian states, aiming to give citizens and tourists a unique cultural experience within the city. Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said the project intends to showcase India’s diversity in one place while boosting tourism.

PMC currently maintains more than 220 parks, but only a handful have unique themes. This has resulted in heavy footfall at select locations. To address this, the civic body has begun redeveloping older gardens and plans to involve students from Pune’s art colleges in designing the new themed parks.

During a recent review meeting, the Commissioner expressed concern over the lack of cleanliness and aesthetic appeal at several public spaces. He directed officials to prioritise beautification of major junctions and key areas to improve the city’s tourism profile. Additional Commissioner Omprakash Divte, City Engineer Prashant Waghmare and Chief Garden Superintendent Ashok Ghorpade were present at the meeting.

Currently, Pu La Deshpande Garden is the only major concept-based park in Pune. With this initiative, the PMC plans to develop similar spaces celebrating the traditions, architecture, art and cultural identity of different states.

Ram said the plan will help tourists explore India’s cultural richness without leaving Pune. The civic body will finalise detailed designs in consultation with artists, designers and urban planners before commencing work on the proposed theme parks.
