Pune: PMC to Enforce Sensor-Based Air Quality Monitoring at Construction Sites

Pune, 10th October 2025: In a move to curb particulate matter pollution from construction activities, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has made it mandatory for all construction sites to install sensor-based air quality monitoring systems, officials announced on Friday.

As per the directive issued by Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, all sensor devices must undergo scientific verification through the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pashan. The Commissioner emphasized that no construction project will be approved unless the verification is successfully completed.

The decision was finalized during a joint meeting involving the Environment Department, the Building Permit Department, and WRI India. To ensure smooth implementation, a task force committee has been formed, comprising representatives from CREDAI, NAREDCO, the Marathi Construction Professionals Association, and sensor manufacturers. An action plan has also been prepared for rolling out the initiative.

The sensor systems will provide real-time monitoring of PM 2.5 and PM 10 dust levels at construction sites, allowing authorities to take immediate corrective measures if pollution levels exceed permissible limits. All data will be consolidated on a centralized monitoring dashboard for continuous oversight.

Officials said the initiative is a significant step toward improving air quality in Pune and ensuring cleaner air for residents, particularly in areas heavily affected by dust from construction projects.

Encouraging proactive compliance, the PMC has warned construction companies that non-compliance with the sensor verification and monitoring requirements will result in the denial of project approvals.
