Pune: PMC to File Cases Against 110 for Defacing Public Spaces with Unauthorized Advertisements

Pune, 1st January 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is cracking down on defacement of civic spaces by initiating criminal proceedings against 110 individuals, including operators of advertising agencies, for installing illegal banners and hoardings.
According to PMC officials, these actions are in line with the administration’s solid waste management rules and directives issued by the Supreme Court. “We will file complaints against those responsible for putting up unauthorized advertisements that deface public areas,” stated Prithviraj BP, Additional Commissioner of the PMC.
The civic body’s sky sign department is collaborating with the anti-encroachment department to address violations involving the illegal placement of banners and hoardings in the city.
Citizens and activists have called for stricter measures to prevent such violations, emphasizing the need for transparency in permissions. “Details of approvals must be prominently printed on all advertising materials in large, bold text,” suggested an activist.
He further proposed that PMC should extend its efforts to the source of the issue. “Action must begin at the printing press and flex manufacturers. Printing ad materials should require proof of permission. Otherwise, simply removing the illegal banners will not have a lasting impact,” he added.
