Pune: PMC To Launch Helpline And “Tree Ambulance” To Preserve City’s Green Cover; Initiave To Start June 5

Pune, 14th May 2025: In a bid to address the challenges faced by roadside trees and remove nails embedded in tree trunks, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced the launch of a ‘Tree Ambulance’ initiative. The initiative is set to commence on 5th June, on the World Environment Day.
Pune is home to several old trees, especially along major roads, and the ongoing development projects often disrupt the natural growth of these trees. While the PMC undertakes replantation of trees affected by construction activities, the increasing damage to existing trees due to various reasons has become a growing concern. Unauthorized advertisements and banners nailed onto tree trunks are further exacerbating the situation, reducing the lifespan of these trees. In response, the PMC has introduced the ‘Tree Ambulance’ initiative to address these issues effectively.
PMC Additional Commissioner Om Prakash Divate informed that under this initiative, the PMC will conduct a comprehensive survey of trees across the city. All nails and other objects driven into the trunks will be removed, and structures obstructing the growth of trees will be dismantled. The specially equipped ‘Tree Ambulance’ will be staffed with personnel trained in tree care and maintenance.
“The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with the PMC’s Garden Department, ensuring that every tree in the city receives the necessary attention and care,” Divate stated.
“Trees play a vital role in environmental conservation. However, in some areas, trees are being cut down for development projects or are falling due to storms. Improper maintenance of these trees has led to a higher mortality rate,” said Divate.
“Moreover, many trees have been subjected to nailing for unauthorized advertisements, further damaging them. This initiative aims to put an end to such practices and restore the health of the city’s trees. We also urge NGOs and citizens to participate actively,” he added further.
Additionally, the PMC is considering the launch of a dedicated helpline for tree conservation. Residents will be able to report concerns about trees in their vicinity, and the ‘Tree Ambulance’ team will promptly address these issues. The PMC also plans to deploy trained staff to oversee the care and maintenance of trees under this initiative.
