Pune, 8th October 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will now take responsibility for cleaning major roads in the Pune Cantonment Board area, despite the cantonment not being part of the civic body’s jurisdiction.

The decision has been taken as garbage lying along major roads in the cantonment area has been affecting the overall cleanliness and image of the city. While waste is regularly collected in the rest of Pune, garbage along roads in the cantonment area often remains unattended.

PMC additional commissioner Prajit Nair said the civic body would undertake regular cleaning of major roads in the area through its solid waste management department. The exercise is expected to cost around Rs 2 crore annually.

The cantonment area is located in the heart of the city and houses several important government offices, including the divisional commissioner’s office and offices of various state government departments. Ministers, MLAs, MPs and other dignitaries frequently visit the area, apart from the large number of citizens who commute through it.

Civic officials said garbage accumulating along both sides of major roads had become a concern. Although the area is outside PMC limits, visitors generally consider it part of Pune, and the poor cleanliness has an impact on the city’s overall image.

The PMC has held discussions with cantonment authorities, who have agreed to the civic body undertaking regular cleaning of major roads in the area. The PMC health department is expected to begin the work soon.

The decision will impose an additional financial burden on the civic body as it involves cleaning an area outside its jurisdiction. However, the administration said the move was necessary to maintain cleanliness around key administrative centres and protect the city’s overall image.

“Several important offices are located in the cantonment area, resulting in frequent visits by dignitaries. The poor cleanliness there can create a misconception about the PMC’s work. To ensure that the city maintains a clean and attractive image, the PMC has decided to clean the major roads in the cantonment area,” Nair said.
