Pune: PMPML To Introduce Automated ‘Next Stop Announcement’ System In Buses
Pune, 13th March 2025: In a bid to enhance commuter convenience, the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has decided to implement an automated ‘Next Stop Announcement’ system in its buses. This initiative aims to assist senior citizens, visually impaired passengers along with disabled individuals. The audio recordings for over 4,000 bus stops are in the final stage, and PMPML officials have confirmed that system trials will begin soon.
While automated announcements are a common feature in metros, railways, and airports, PMPML buses have lacked this facility until now. As a result, visually impaired, elderly, and disabled passengers often struggle to identify their designated stops, leading to confusion and missed destinations. Additionally, travelers unfamiliar with Pune’s routes rely on fellow passengers for guidance. The new system is expected to provide greater independence and convenience, reducing their dependency on others.
The initiative is also designed to minimize disputes between passengers and drivers over missed stops. PMPML officials stated that this improvement aligns with their ongoing efforts to enhance public transport services and ensure a seamless commuting experience.
PMPML operates buses across 472 routes, covering Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) limits. The ‘Next Stop Announcement’ system will be integrated with the existing GPS facility installed in buses, allowing passengers to track their bus routes via the PMPML mobile app. The audio system will announce upcoming stops in real-time, ensuring that passengers are well-informed before their designated stop arrives. Modern speaker systems will also be installed in buses to ensure clear and timely announcements.
With over 4,300 bus stops across Pune, this initiative is expected to significantly improve public transportation accessibility and efficiency, making daily commutes smoother and more organized.
