Market Yard, 12th June 2025: In a significant move following the tragic death of a woman in a road accident at Gangadham Chowk yesterday, Pune Police has announced a complete daytime ban on heavy vehicle movement in the busy Market Yard area. The ban, effective immediately, allows heavy vehicles to operate only between 10 pm and 6 am, Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar confirmed.

The decision was taken after a woman riding a two-wheeler was fatally struck by a speeding truck at Gangadham Chowk on Wednesday. In response, Commissioner Kumar visited the accident site on Thursday, accompanied by senior officers and local public representatives, and took stock of the traffic situation and safety concerns in the area.

“Accidents involving heavy vehicles have been on the rise in this area. As an immediate safety measure, we have decided to temporarily allow heavy vehicles to operate only during the night,” said Commissioner Kumar. “Daytime movement of heavy vehicles in Market Yard is now completely prohibited until further notice.”

Small Vehicles Unaffected, Illegal Godowns Sealed
The restriction does not apply to small vehicles transporting goods to the Market Yard, which will continue to operate during the day. In a related crackdown, police have sealed three illegal godowns operating in the area and initiated legal action against them.

“We have received complaints about illegal godowns and unregulated vehicular movement linked to new construction sites. Immediate instructions have been issued to address these,” Kumar added.

Action Against Liquor Shops, More Measures Ahead
Police have also received complaints about public inconvenience caused by liquor shops in the locality. Commissioner Kumar stated that legal action will be taken against such establishments if violations are found.
“Whatever steps are needed to streamline traffic and improve safety in Gangadham, we will take them without delay,” he assured.

Pune’s Market Yard area, a major commercial hub, sees dense vehicular movement throughout the day. With the surge in new construction and unregulated traffic, the risk of road accidents has increased, prompting authorities to intervene after Wednesday’s fatal mishap.

Authorities have urged residents and commercial operators to cooperate with the new traffic rules to ensure public safety.
