Pune, 25th March 2025: Pune Police will destroy 788 kg of seized drugs worth ₹7.76 crore at a private company in the Ranjangaon MIDC area today, as per court orders. The drugs, including mephedrone, brown sugar, opium, LSD, and ganja, were confiscated last year during multiple operations by the anti-narcotics squad and investigation teams from various nine police stations.
Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated that a significant quantity—758 kg—of the seized drugs consisted of ganja smuggled into Pune from Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.
The drugs were inspected at the police headquarters in Shivajinagar in the presence of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, Joint CP Ranjan Kumar Sharma, Additional CP (Crime) Shailesh Balkawade, DCP (Crime) Nikhil Pingle, DCP (Headquarters) Dr Sandeep Bhajibhakre as well as officials from Excise department and forensic science laboratory.
Many college students in the city have reportedly fallen prey to marijuana addiction, prompting the commissioner to direct a crackdown on its clandestine sale.
Investigations have also revealed that several youths, initially addicted to marijuana, have moved on to the more expensive and dangerous mephedrone. Alarmingly, even minors in residential areas have become habitual users of marijuana. In response, Pune Police are intensifying efforts against drug peddlers and smugglers operating in the city.
In a major drug bust, Pune Police had earlier raided Earthchem Laboratories in Kurkumbh MIDC area, seizing mephedrone worth ₹3,674 crore. The department has since written to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), requesting permission to destroy the seized mephedrone in Pune. This process is expected to take place in April.
The destruction of the confiscated drugs in Ranjangaon today marks a significant step in Pune Police’s ongoing efforts to curb the drug menace in the city.
