Pune, 9th July 2026: Due to ongoing heavy rainfall, several IT companies allowed employees to work from home, and prolonged power outages across Hinjewadi and adjoining areas have left many employees unable to work, highlighting the challenges of remote working during extreme weather.

Power supply was disrupted in several localities, including Hinjewadi IT Park, Wakad, Ravet, Punawale, Kiwale, Marunji, Jambhe, Nere and Kasarsai. In many areas, residents reported that electricity was restored only after several hours, while parts of Ravet, Punawale and Kiwale continued to face outages for nearly 72 hours.

Residents of Kolte-Patil Life Republic township also reported prolonged power cuts. An IT professional residing in the township said that despite being permitted to work from home, the lack of electricity made it impossible to continue working.

“Not every employee has an inverter. Even those who do can use it only for about four hours. Once the backup runs out, we have no option but to stop working,” the employee said.

The prolonged outages also disrupted daily life in several residential societies. The power cuts affected the water supply, while non-functional lifts caused inconvenience to senior citizens, persons with disabilities, children and patients living in high-rise buildings.

According to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), electricity supply was shut as a precautionary measure after floodwater entered several areas following incessant rainfall. Feeders and transformers located in waterlogged locations were switched off to prevent electrical accidents.

After the water receded, restoration work began. However, several transformers had developed faults after being submerged, delaying the resumption of the power supply.

In the Wakad area alone, around 40,000 consumers were affected by the outage since Tuesday night. MSEDCL said power supply to the majority of consumers had been restored by Wednesday afternoon, while complaints from the remaining consumers were being addressed.

“We had to suspend electricity supply in waterlogged areas as a safety precaution. Restoration work began after the floodwater receded, and around 80% of the affected power supply has been restored. Efforts are underway to restore electricity to the remaining consumers at the earliest,” said Sunil Kakade, Chief Engineer, MSEDCL.
