Shivajinagar, 16th August 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has achieved a significant milestone in the road widening endeavor from Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) to Shivaji Nagar, successfully obtaining possession of 16 out of the required 21 plots. Collaborative efforts are underway to secure the remaining plots from state and central government institutions, as well as banks.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s proactive engagement with these entities has yielded positive responses, brightening the prospects of resolving the road expansion conundrum in the Ganeshkhind area.

Construction is currently underway for a multi-storey flyover near Acharya Anandrishiji Maharaj Chowk, positioned in front of the university. The forthcoming alterations in traffic flow due to metro and flyover construction may exacerbate traffic congestion, prompting Deputy Chief Minister Pawar to recently assess the metro, flyover, and road widening projects. Immediate directives have been issued to officials across various departments, including the Municipal Corporation, to ensure seamless coordination.

The administration requires 21 plots along the route stretching from University to Rangehills Corner and onward to Shivajinagar for the successful realization of the widening initiative. To date, 16 landowners have relinquished possession. The remaining plots are associated with esteemed institutions like Govt. ITI, MSEDCL, RBI, and two others.

Diligent efforts are in motion, engaging senior officials to secure the necessary permissions from RBI. In parallel, the building development department has been instructed to rectify encroachments along the road, and the traffic police department has been approached to devise alternative routes for motorists.

“We have successfully obtained possession of the required land for the road widening project. The outstanding three to four plots involve government institutions, and we are actively pursuing their allocation. A resolution is anticipated in the near future,” affirmed Vikram Kumar, Commissioner of Pune Municipal Corporation.

The road widening initiative necessitated the cooperation of key local entrepreneurs, requiring the use of a portion of one businessman’s residence and another businessman’s office area. Demonstrating their commitment to the community, both entrepreneurs have agreed to contribute space to the municipal corporation, thereby facilitating the progress of the widening project.
