Pune Railway Station’s Heritage Building To Be Cleaned Using Innovative Technique, Process Likely To Take Two Months
Pune 20th Oct 2023: The Pune railway administration is embarking on a significant restoration project, aiming to rejuvenate the 100-year-old heritage building of the Pune railway station. Employing an innovative technique known as the ‘sand plastic method,’ the administration plans to remove stains and dirt, restoring the front side of the heritage structure to its former glory.
Preserving the heritage building is of utmost importance, prompting the railway administration to initiate regular cleaning and maintenance efforts. However, due to the delicate nature of the heritage structure, traditional high-pressure cleaning methods are unsuitable. Consequently, the administration has opted for the meticulous ‘sand plastic method’ to clean the outer facade of the building.
The restoration process has commenced, with one section of the building already treated using this unique cleaning technique. The entire cleaning endeavor is expected to span approximately two months, ensuring a thorough and careful restoration of the heritage building’s front side. Once the restoration is complete, the heritage building will be rejuvenated, offering a fresh and revitalized appearance, said officials.
The main building of Pune railway station holds historical significance as one of the city’s oldest structures, inaugurated on July 27, 1925. Serving as a hub for more than 250 daily train operations and facilitating the travel of nearly 2 lakh passengers, Pune railway station has been a pivotal part of the city’s transportation network since its operations commenced in 1858.
