Pune Records Drop in Fatal Road Accident Cases in 2024

Pune, 24th January 2025: The Traffic Branch of Pune City Police has reported a notable decrease in road accidents in the city, attributed to a series of measures implemented in coordination with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Data reveals a reduction in fatalities, with 334 deaths recorded in 2023 and 310 in 2024.
Efforts by Pune Police and PMC to improve road safety and streamline traffic management have played a significant role in this decline. Measures included road quality enhancement, pothole repairs, lane marking, and the removal of obstacles. Additionally, stringent actions against violations such as drunk driving, wrong-side driving, and triple-seat riding have contributed to improved road safety.
The police have also proposed license cancellations for habitual traffic offenders. As a result, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has revoked 1,345 licenses. Furthermore, with PMC’s support, the number of accident-prone “blackspots” has been reduced from 60 to 36.
In an effort to curb the rising influence of pubs and bars in Pune, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has taken firm action against establishments violating rules. Many pubs and bars, notorious for staying open until the early hours of the morning, were linked to increasing youth addiction and related accidents. Additionally, drug smuggling activities were reportedly gaining traction in such establishments.
