Warje, 1st April 2023: A retired government official from Karvenagar was defrauded of Rs 50,000 in a power bill scam on January 11 last year, as per a case being investigated by the Warje Malwadi police. The victim reported the incident to the Pune cyber police after providing evidence. An FIR was filed on Thursday.

According to the police report, the victim received a text message stating that the non-payment of the preceding month’s MSEDCL bill was pending, and he immediately dialed the number provided in the SMS. The person who answered the phone identified himself as an MSEDCL employee and threatened to disconnect his power supply if the bill was not paid. He instructed the victim to download an app to settle the bill, which allowed him to gain remote access to the victim’s phone and transfer Rs. 50,000 from his bank account.

Inspector Dattaram Bagwe, who is handling the case, said that the retired government official discovered the fraud and made unsuccessful attempts to contact the perpetrator. He then informed his bank’s customer care to block his bank account. The police have requested transaction details from the victim’s bank to aid in their investigation.

A case of cheating and offences under the IT Act have been filed at the Warje Malwadi police station.
