Pune, 13th December 2025: In a major push to reduce traffic congestion in Pune city and its surrounding rural areas, the Maharashtra government has accelerated work on several large-scale road and metro infrastructure projects, including the Pune ring road, road widening projects and proposed metro corridors.

Revenue Minister Dada Bhuse informed the state Assembly that the western section of the Pune ring road is targeted for completion by May 2026, while the eastern section is expected to be completed by May 2028. He was responding to a calling attention motion moved by MLA Rahul Kul during the ongoing Nagpur winter session. MLAs Sunil Shelke and Abhijit Patil also took part in the discussion.

Bhuse said the state government, through agencies such as the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC), is undertaking multiple infrastructure projects to ease traffic congestion in both urban and rural parts of Pune district.

“Work on nine of the twelve packages of the eastern ring road is progressing at a rapid pace. The remaining three packages are currently awaiting administrative approval. The tender process for these packages will be completed before May 2026, and actual work will commence from October 2026,” Bhuse said. He added that work on all five packages of the western ring road is underway.

The minister clarified that the revised completion deadlines are May 2026 for the western section and May 2028 for the eastern section of the Pune ring road.

On metro connectivity, Bhuse said the technical feasibility of the proposed Hadapsar–Loni Kalbhor metro corridor will be examined, after which further decisions will be taken. The corridor is expected to significantly improve public transport options in eastern Pune and adjoining rural areas.

Updating the House on road development projects, Bhuse said MSIDC is carrying out fast-paced upgradation of key roads across Pune district. The tender process for the Hadapsar–Yavat road project is currently underway. He also informed that the cabinet has approved the Pune–Shirur six-lane road project, and the tender acceptance process is in progress.

Land acquisition for the Shirur–Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar Greenfield road project has been completed, the minister said. In addition, the tender process for the Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur elevated road is underway, which is expected to ease congestion on one of Pune’s busiest industrial corridors.

During the discussion, Rahul Kul raised concerns related to land and housing issues affecting development. He demanded that the existing 25-acre land limit required for Non-Agricultural (NA) conversion be reduced and called for a resolution to issues related to houses built on grazing lands. Kul said these changes were necessary to make the development process more people-centric.

Kul also expressed his views on Assembly Bill No. 94 of 2025, the Maharashtra Prevention of Fragmentation and Consolidation of Holdings (Amendment) Bill, 2025, stressing the need to balance development with the interests of farmers and rural residents.

The government maintained that expediting infrastructure projects such as the Pune ring road, metro expansion and highway upgrades will play a crucial role in easing traffic bottlenecks and supporting long-term urban and regional growth.
