Kharadi, 15th January 2025: The bustling streets of Kharadi, one of Pune’s prominent IT hubs, have been in the spotlight once again—this time for a disturbing incident of road rage involving a local professional, Indranil Sinha. His recent experience highlights the twin challenges of poor infrastructure and public safety, raising concerns among residents and activists alike.

Road safety activist Prateek Singh took to Twitter (now X) to narrate Sinha’s ordeal. On December 11, 2024, around 8:30 PM, Sinha was returning home from his office in Kharadi when he encountered a deep pothole on the Kharadi-Hadapsar bypass near Accolade Society.

“The road was wet despite it not being a rainy day,” Sinha shared, suspecting the water may have been due to passing tankers. Attempting to navigate cautiously on the narrow and poorly maintained road, his car rolled over the pothole, causing a small splash that inadvertently hit a parked scooter. This, he explained, triggered the aggression of a group of men nearby.

According to Sinha’s statement, the men chased his vehicle and stopped him further down the road. “I tried to stay calm and explain that the splash was unintentional, but they wouldn’t listen. Their behavior suggested an intention to extort money,” he added. Despite his refusal to comply with their demands, the confrontation escalated when one of the men kicked his car, leaving a dent, before fleeing the scene.

Sinha promptly reported the incident to the police, providing the scooter’s registration number (MH12 GP 6147) as evidence. However, he expressed frustration over the lack of action by law enforcement. “The vehicle’s insurance has been expired since 2012, but the police refused to issue any challan or take action,” he said, further noting that such incidents are alarmingly common in the Kharadi area.

This incident has reignited conversations around road safety and police accountability in Pune.

Sinha’s experience is not an isolated case. Many locals and commuters have shared similar stories of confrontations arising from unintentional splashes or damages caused by poor road conditions.
