Pune, 8th July 2025: Pune is set to witness the installation of its tallest statue yet, a 60-foot bronze full-body statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, at Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan Khurd (Survey No. 19 and 20). The project, titled Hindavi Swarajya Nirmiti Shilp, has received approval from the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Estimate Committee with a sanctioned budget of Rs 29 crore.

The statue will stand on a 30-foot pedestal, bringing the total height of the monument to 90 feet. The location lies between the Chandani Chowk–Warje Road, the Mulshi–Kothrud flyover, and the Mumbai–Satara Highway service road, covering a total area of 5,542 square meters.

The initial proposal included a 20-foot statue on a 17-foot pedestal, along with stone-cladded entry gates, lotus-petal-shaped fountains, yellow-and-red stone pavements, and garden development. However, following demands from Shivaji enthusiasts and a recommendation from Union Minister of State Muralidhar Mohol, the plan was upgraded to include a 60-foot bronze statue.

The revamped proposal also includes RCC retaining walls, compound walls, small secondary entrances, and dedicated landscaping works. Tenders for the earlier Rs 6.56 crore plan had been approved, but this revised version now involves a single contractor handling both the pedestal and the statue construction.

Superintending Engineer Rohidas Gavhane from PMC’s Building Department confirmed the update and said the project will symbolize the spirit of Hindavi Swarajya in an iconic public space.
