Pune, 25th November 2022: The Standing Committee has approved awarding the work of widening the old Pune-Mumbai road in Khadki Cantonment limits, development of the BRT route, and completion of remaining works at Bopodi to Krushnai Infrastructure at Rs 74,75,089. Therefore, the problem of road widening, which has been stalled for six years due to a lack of land acquisition, will be solved.

The old Mumbai – Pune highway is an important road connecting Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad cities. In Pimpri limits, the road up to Dapodi has been completed, but in Pune Municipal limits, the army had not given space for land acquisition of the 2.1 km long road in Khadki. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been trying for this for many years. The road is expected to be 42 meters wide from Hatchery Center to Sant Tukaram Maharaj Bridge (Harris Bridge). At present, this road is only 21 meters wide which causes a lot of traffic jams.

Since 2015, the Municipal Corporation has been following up on the work of this road. In 2016, a tender was issued for this, but the work could not be carried out due to a lack of space for the road. Now, after six years, the army decided to hand over this place. Hence, it has been decided to start the road work. At some places along this route, the land has been taken over by private landowners, while others have shown their readiness to take compensation through TDR.

Against this backdrop, the Road Department of the Municipal Corporation appointed a consultant for the work of this road and carried out the tender process. Krushnai Infrastructure got the lowest bid of Rs 74,75,89. This tender is 16 per cent less than the preliminary calculation sheet. The tender has been approved by the Standing Committee.

Six years ago, the municipal administration floated a tender to prevent traffic congestion in Khadki by widening the old Mumbai-Pune highway. But due to a lack of land for the road, the municipal administration was disconcerted to cancel the tender. The cost of this work, which used to be Rs 50 crores, has now gone up to Rs 75 crores. The cost of this work has increased by Rs 25 crores in six years.
