Pune RTO Act Against 175 Out-Of-State Vehicles Over Prolonged Use Without Maharashtra Registration, Rs 22.51 Lakh Fine Recovered
Pune, 3rd October 2026: The Pune RTO has intensified action against vehicles registered outside Maharashtra but being used in the city for prolonged periods without completing mandatory state registration and tax formalities.
Between April 1 and September 15, 2026, the RTO recorded 175 violations and imposed fines totalling Rs 35.77 lakh. Fines worth Rs 22.51 lakh have been recovered in 101 cases. In comparison, 243 such cases were recorded during 2025-26, with fines of Rs 42.79 lakh imposed.
The enforcement drive covers vehicles bearing registration numbers from Karnataka, Gujarat, Telangana, Delhi and other states that are regularly used in Pune.
Under Maharashtra motor vehicle rules, an out-of-state vehicle used in the state for more than one year must be registered in Maharashtra and allotted a new registration number, along with compliance with applicable tax requirements.
RTO teams are checking vehicle documents and questioning owners to establish whether vehicles are being used temporarily or have effectively been based in Pune for an extended period.
Officials said determining how long an out-of-state vehicle has actually been in the city remains a challenge, as some owners claim they are temporary visitors.
