Pune: RTO Cracks Down on Unauthorized Vehicles Near Swargate Bus Depot After Rape Incident
Swargate, 5th March 2025: In the wake of a rape incident at the Swargate bus depot, the Regional Transport Department’s (RTO) quick response team has launched a crackdown on unauthorized vehicles operating within 200 meters of the bus stand. Similar action is expected at Shivajinagar and other depots, RTO officials confirmed.
Following the crime at Swargate depot, concerns have been raised about unregulated entry of private bus drivers and rickshaw pullers inside the premises, leading to security vulnerabilities. The depot manager had repeatedly written to the police and RTO administration, urging them to take action. However, with no concrete measures taken earlier, questions arose about the efficiency of traffic police and RTO authorities in maintaining order.
As a result, the RTO began a strict enforcement drive on Monday (March 3), targeting unauthorized vehicles parked near Swargate Bus Stand. During the operation, action was taken against 20 private buses, rickshaws, and other vehicles, resulting in fines exceeding ₹1.48 lakh.
Documents and Safety Inspections Conducted
The Vayuveg team (Unit 3) conducted a thorough inspection of private passenger buses parked near the depot, checking for compliance with permits, driving licenses, uniforms, and other required documents. Several violations were detected, with some vehicles failing to meet passenger safety standards.
“Private passenger vehicles are strictly prohibited from operating within 200 meters of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (ST) bus stations. In line with security measures, the Vayuveg (No. 3) team has taken action against 20 vehicles in the Swargate area. Similar enforcement will be carried out in other depot areas as well,” said Swapnil Bhosale, Deputy Regional Transport Officer, Pune.
With increasing concerns about security lapses at major transport hubs, authorities are now under pressure to tighten enforcement and enhance passenger safety across Pune’s bus depots.
