Pune RTO Launches Inspection Drive For Private Buses Following Hinjawadi Fire Incident
Pune, 21st March 2025: In the wake of the recent fire incident involving a private tempo-travel bus in Hinjawadi, concerns over the safety of private buses have resurfaced. As a precautionary measure, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has launched a thorough inspection drive for all private buses. Special Vayuveg Pathak have been deployed to conduct detailed safety checks. Additionally, the RTO plans to hold an immediate meeting with all private bus owners to emphasize safety protocols.
Every day, around 1,000 private buses operate to and from Pune, transporting passengers to various parts of the state. With the onset of the intense summer heat, the risk of fire incidents increases, making vehicle fitness checks essential. According to the RTO, negligence by private bus owners and drivers regarding safety measures often contributes to such accidents. In many cases, vehicles are sent on routes without undergoing proper maintenance or safety inspections, heightening the risk of mishaps.
To enhance passenger safety, the RTO has issued strict guidelines for private bus operators. Drivers have been instructed not to use mobile phones while driving, avoid consuming alcohol, and adhere to speed regulations. The installation of speed governors and regular vehicle maintenance have been mandated. Furthermore, operators have been warned not to obstruct emergency exits. However, the RTO noted that these rules are frequently ignored, putting passengers’ lives at risk.
In response, the air-velocity teams will conduct stringent checks in the coming days to ensure full compliance with safety protocols, the Pune RTO administration confirmed.
