Pune: Saras Baug Chowpatty Transformation: PMC Approves Road Closure and Multi-Level Food Complex

Pune, 12th December 2023: The iconic Saras Baug Chowpatty in Pune is set to undergo a significant transformation with the approval of new development plans. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has sanctioned the reconstruction, which includes the closure of the road at Saras Baug Chowpatty and the establishment of a two-story food stall complex. This decision will result in the removal of 78 small shops in the area.

The approved plan, presented by architects, modifies the previous proposal and increases the estimated cost from 8 crores to 18 crores and 50 lakhs. Additionally, an underground parking lot is slated to be constructed, with anticipated costs rising by an additional two to three crores.

Saras Baug remains a popular destination for both tourists and Pune citizens, attracting visitors with its scenic park, exercise facilities, and diverse food stalls. The decision to reconstruct the Chowpatty gained momentum a year and a half ago when the encroachment department sealed numerous small shops due to unauthorized street encroachments.

The new plan proposes the permanent closure of the Saras Baug Chowpatty road for traffic. In its place, a two-story structure accommodating 54 stalls on the ground floor and 24 stalls on the first floor will be constructed. The development, known as Khau Galli, aims to enhance the vibrancy of the area with attractive colours and electric lighting.

Furthermore, the project envisions an underground parking facility capable of accommodating 200 vehicles. To accommodate these changes, adjustments will be made to the development plan, as confirmed by PMC Commissioner Vikram Kumar.

The key features of the proposed plan include:

– Closure and Reconstruction: Permanent closure of Saras Baug Chowpatty road for traffic and the construction of a two-story food stall complex.

– Stall Layout: The ground floor will house 54 stalls, and the first floor will have 24 stalls.

– Shop Size: Small shops on the ground floor will measure 1.8 by 2.4 meters, while the first-floor block will be 3.75 by 3 meters.

– Additional Amenities: Special seating arrangements for customers, solar panels on the roof, and entrances from both sides for the underground parking facility.

This redevelopment plan aims to revitalize Sarasbagh Chowpatty, providing a modern and vibrant space for residents and visitors alike. The changes are expected to enhance the overall experience of the popular destination.
