Kalewadi, 13th October 2026: A private school bus rammed into a road divider in Kalewadi on Monday afternoon after its driver suddenly felt dizzy. No students were on board at the time, averting a major accident. The driver sustained minor injuries.

The accident occurred around 2.15pm on October 12 when the bus (MH 02 BQ 1087) was passing through Kalewadi and the driver lost control. The damaged bus was removed from the road to restore traffic.

Rajendra Bahirat, senior inspector at Kalewadi police station, said the driver suffered minor injuries and no students were present in the bus.

The incident has raised concerns over school transport safety in Pimpri Chinchwad. According to September data from the Regional Transport Office (RTO), the city has 3,305 registered school buses, of which around 450 are yet to undergo fitness inspections.

In a separate inspection drive in August, traffic police checked 370 school buses and found violations in 148 of them, accounting for nearly 40% of the vehicles inspected.

The findings have highlighted the need for regular checks of school buses, including their brakes, tyres, lights and other safety equipment. Calls have also grown for ensuring the health and fitness of drivers transporting schoolchildren.
