Pune: School Safety Program Empowers Teen to Report Abuse; Private Tutor Arrested
Ambegaon, 16th July 2026: A school safety seminar detailing the difference between safe and unsafe touch has enabled a 14-year-old girl to identify abuse, resulting in the arrest of her private tutor by the Ambegaon police late Tuesday night.
The 42-year-old suspect, Aarif Yakub Sayyad, a resident of Katraj, had allegedly subjected the teenager to inappropriate physical contact on several occasions over the last three weeks. A special court has remanded him to police custody till 17th July.
According to Senior Police Inspector Sharad Zine of the Ambegaon police station (Pune City Police), the survivor belongs to an economically disadvantaged family. On the recommendation of a family friend, they had hired the private tutor two years ago to teach the girl her school curriculum and basic computer skills.
The abuse came to light after the girl attended a school-organized awareness session. Recognizing that her tutor’s behavior was wrong, she confided in her mother, who then informed the girl’s father.
Following a formal complaint lodged by the father, police officials registered a case and took the tutor into custody late Tuesday night.
