Pune Sees Rise in Seasonal Flu and Viral Infections Amid Monsoon
Pune, 18th August 2025: With the ongoing monsoon, the city is witnessing an increase in seasonal flu and viral infections, including strains like H1N1 (swine flu) and H3N2. While most symptoms are mild apart from high fever, the number of hospitalizations has not seen a significant rise.
Experts from private hospitals report that symptoms typically subside after treatment with antiviral medications such as Fluvir, particularly for children.
Dr. Pramod Suryavanshi, Senior Neonatologist and Pediatrician at Bharati Vidyapeeth Hospital, said, “We have observed an uptick in flu patients. Laboratory tests indicate the presence of H1N1 in some cases, followed by the seasonal flu virus H3N2. Children are presenting with fevers ranging from 102 to 104°F, chills, and cough, which usually last three to four days. Some children also experience fever attacks, which respond well to Fluvir. Additionally, RSV and Adenovirus infections are being detected, though at lower levels. The current weather is favorable for viral activity, leading to this increase. Patients with these symptoms should consult a doctor promptly.”
Dr. Amit Dravid, an infectious disease specialist at Noble Hospital, added, “We are seeing more patients with cold, cough, fever, and shortness of breath, showing signs of swine flu. Some require hospital admission for pneumonia treatment. Cases of typhoid, stomach ache, and diarrhea have also increased. These viral diseases are seasonal, and patients generally improve with Fluvir. The elderly, in particular, are experiencing shortness of breath.”
Despite the rise in viral infections, most patients are recovering through outpatient treatment without the need for hospitalization. Dr. Prasad Rajhans, an intensive care specialist at Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital, said, “No swine flu or H1N1 patients have been admitted recently, and no unusual viruses have been detected.”
Reasons for the Increase:
Seasonal flu surge due to weather changes
Environment conducive to virus growth
Spread through close contact
Infection transmission from sick children in schools
Precautionary Measures:
Consult a doctor if experiencing cold, fever, or cough
Senior citizens should get the swine flu vaccine
Wear masks in crowded places
Avoid getting wet in the rain
Consume protein-rich foods to boost immunity
Health experts emphasize that timely treatment, vaccination, and hygiene can help mitigate the impact of these viral infections during the monsoon season.
