Pune: Sharad Pawar urges Maharashtra Govt to Act as 20 Chakan Firms Consider Relocation
Pune, 14th August 2026: NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar has urged the Maharashtra government to urgently address infrastructure problems in the Chakan industrial area after 20 companies reportedly decided to relocate, citing traffic congestion, pollution, water and power supply issues and poor roads.
In a social media post, Pawar said the government must act to prevent the companies from moving out, protect employment and safeguard Maharashtra’s position as a major industrial hub.
More than 2,000 workers are employed by the companies that are considering relocation, according to Pawar. He called for infrastructure development in Chakan, Talegaon and other industrial estates to be taken up on a “war footing”.
He also sought immediate measures to repair pothole-ridden roads and ease traffic congestion, along with better coordination among the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), PMRDA, PWD and NHAI to implement integrated solutions.
Pawar further urged the state government to hold a high-level meeting with industrialists and establish a dedicated single-window mechanism to ensure that their grievances are addressed within a fixed timeframe.
He also raised concerns over the number of companies that have shut down in Maharashtra in recent years. Citing information provided in Parliament by Union Minister of State for Corporate Affairs Harsh Malhotra in response to a question raised by MP Rajabhau Waje during the Monsoon Session, Pawar said 36,211 private companies in Maharashtra had closed down over the past five years.
However, he questioned whether the government had data on how many jobs were lost following these closures and whether affected employees had received adequate compensation.
Pawar said Maharashtra has traditionally been regarded as an industry-friendly state and that industries relocating or shutting down because of inadequate infrastructure was a matter of concern.
He urged successive governments to protect the state’s industrial base and uphold the legacy of former chief minister Yashwantrao Chavan, who played a key role in shaping Maharashtra’s industrial development.
