Pune: Sick Dog Crushed Twice Under Car in Pimpri-Chinchwad’s Sangvi; Case Filed, Driver Arrested
Reported by Varad Bhatkhande
Pimpri-Chinchwad, 2nd July 2025: A shocking case of animal cruelty has emerged from Navi Sangvi, where a dog was crushed twice by a car driver in an act captured on CCTV. The disturbing footage shows the dog shrieking in agony as the car runs over it not once, but twice, raising serious questions about the driver’s intent and humanity.
The incident took place on Monday morning. According to Sangvi Police, the accused, Nitin Dhawale, a resident of Chakan, was driving a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (registration number MH 12 KT 0449) when he allegedly steered to the left and deliberately ran over the dog around 9 AM. Despite the dog’s agonizing cries, Dhawale reportedly drove over it again moments later.
The dog, reportedly unwell and weak, posed no threat. However, Dhawale claimed he believed the dog was ‘chasing’ him and acted out of ‘fear for his safety’, a justification that eyewitnesses have strongly rejected. According to them, the dog was visibly sick and incapable of chasing or attacking anyone, especially someone inside a car.
Animal lover Kunal Kamat (40), a resident of Navi Sangvi, took the dog to a veterinary hospital in Kokane Chowk, Pimple Saudagar, along with a friend. After identifying the car and gathering evidence, he filed a complaint at Sangvi Police Station.
Dhawale has been booked under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for mischief by killing or maiming an animal, along with relevant sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Kamat has also alleged that Dhawale threatened him after being confronted about the act.
In the viral CCTV footage, it can clearly be seen that the dog was simply resting on the footpath, and the act of running it over was completely unwarranted.
Police Sub-Inspector Vijay Shelar is investigating the case further.
