Pune, 6th March 2024: The commencement of PhD admissions at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is currently pending as the necessary procedures for the implementation of the Maratha Reservation are yet to be finalized. Prospective students are advised to anticipate a brief delay in the admission process. Despite various pre-admission exams, including those conducted by UPSC, taking place in April, the university officials indicate that the Ph.D. pre-admission exam is likely to be scheduled for May.

As aspiring candidates from both Maharashtra and beyond eagerly await admission to the PhD program, several factors, such as the unavailability of online examination facilities and the ongoing implementation of the Maratha reservation, have contributed to the temporary postponement. The Maharashtra state government’s decision to allocate a 10% reservation to the Maratha community, along with the publication of the related ordinance, adds complexity to the admission process. The ordinance is set to be implemented on February 26, prompting the university to make preparations for incorporating central reservation in the Ph.D. admission process. A formal circular detailing the revised admission procedures is expected to be released shortly.

The commencement of the PhD admission process at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is currently pending, with several factors contributing to the delay. The university is actively engaged in completing internal processes related to seat availability at guidance and research centres, as well as implementing the 10% reservation for Marathi community students. Additionally, the unavailability of examination centres for online exams in April poses a challenge.

To ensure a smooth and well-coordinated process, SPPU is mindful of avoiding any scheduling conflicts with the Lok Sabha election program. Officials from the university emphasize that dates for polling and PhD examinations should not coincide. As a result, a clearer picture regarding the Ph.D. admission timeline is expected to emerge in the coming week, following the completion of necessary preparations.

Dr. Parag Kalkar, Pro-Chancellor of SPPU, Pune, stated, “The university is in the process of finalizing essential procedures for the implementation of the Maratha reservation in the Ph.D. admission process. A leaflet providing detailed information will be released soon. The schedule for PhD admission will be published, taking into account the available dates for examination centres to conduct online exams.” As such, prospective Ph.D. applicants are advised to stay tuned for further updates from the university officials.
