Pune: Standing Committee On Defence Visits Formations Of Army’s Southern Command

Pune, 10th January 2023: The Standing Committee on Defence of the Parliament visited Army formations of Southern Command at Jaisalmer, Pokaran and Laungewala between 08-10 Jan 2023 to “Review Strategic Operational Preparedness of Defence Forces” in the current security scenario.

The parameters reviewed included defence preparedness, use of new and indigenous technology, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. The committee also witnessed Integrated Fire Power Demonstration conducted at Pokaran Field Firing Ranges, Rajasthan. The demo witnessed exploitation of versatile and indigenously manufactured weapon systems with devastating effect of fire power visible at the target end.

The committee was headed by Shri Jual Oram MP & Chairperson, SCOD, who along with 22 other members visited the locations. During the visit, Lt Gen AK Singh, AVSM, YSM, SM, VSM, GOC-in-C, Southern Command apprised the committee about the rich history and legacy of the Command since independence, its role and tasks in ensuring the security and territorial integrity of the nation, various other initiatives and measures undertaken by the formation. The briefing was followed by an interaction with the committee. HQ Southern Command is the oldest Command of Indian Army with largest area of responsibility among all other commands. Under Southern Command, the Konark Corps has been defending the borders in the Desert Sector. The sector saw action in 1971 war where the historic battle of Laungewala was fought, thwarting the enemy attempt on Western Front.

The Standing Committee on Defence is a committee comprising of selected Members of Parliament constituted by the Parliament of India for the purpose of legislative overviewing of the defence policies and decision making of the Ministry of Defence.
