Pune: Student Booked for Offensive Remarks on Prophet Muhammad in Social Media Post

Viman Nagar, 21st May 2025: A female student from Symbiosis College in has been booked by the Vimantal (Airport) Police Station for allegedly posting a video on social media containing objectionable remarks about Prophet Muhammad. The video, posted on May 14, 2025, under the Twitter (X) handle @Sharmishta_19, has sparked significant outrage online and prompted legal action.

The student has been identified by the name “Sharmishta,” although her full identity has not yet been confirmed by authorities. The video, which allegedly contained derogatory statements targeting the Islamic faith, was deleted shortly after it was uploaded. However, it had already caught the attention of several users, including the account “Team Rising Falcon” (@TheRFTeam), which reposted the clip and publicly demanded immediate legal action against the student.

Police Head Constable Pravin Gurav from the Airport Police Station’s anti-terrorism cell lodged an official complaint in the case. According to his statement, on May 15, while on duty, he was informed by his senior officers about the controversial video circulating on social media.

Initial investigation revealed that the content of the video had the potential to hurt the religious sentiments of the Muslim community and could incite communal tensions. Despite the original post being removed, copies of the video spread rapidly across various platforms, amplifying public outrage.

Following a technical analysis of the video, police concluded that the remarks were intentionally provocative, aimed at inciting hatred, and posed a risk to communal harmony.

Based on their findings, the Airport Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the student under the following charges:

Section 299, 196 (1)(a) and 353 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).

The investigation is being led under the supervision of Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Dhamane.
