Pune: Swargate-Katraj Underground Metro Work Speeds Up, Traffic Diversions in Place at Market Yard and Bibwewadi
Pune, 20th May 2026: Construction work on the underground Metro corridor between Swargate and Katraj has picked up pace, prompting major traffic diversions around the proposed Metro station sites at Market Yard and Bibwewadi, officials said on Tuesday.
The revised traffic arrangements have been implemented jointly by Pune Metro and Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) to facilitate construction activity while ensuring continuity of public transport services on the busy corridor.
Under the new arrangement, PMPML buses travelling from Katraj towards Swargate will operate through temporary diversion lanes created alongside the footpath between Morebaug and Bhapkar Petrol Pump, instead of using the central BRTS lane. Officials said the BRTS lane passing through the Metro station work zone has been temporarily shut and converted into a wider common lane for buses and other vehicles.
Existing BRTS bus stops on this stretch have also been temporarily relocated. New bus stops have been created along the footpath side to minimise inconvenience to commuters.
Similarly, buses travelling from Swargate towards Katraj will use the side lanes between Bhapkar Petrol Pump and Morebaug before rejoining the original BRTS corridor after Nathubaug bus stop. The BRTS lane in the construction zone on this side has also been modified into a common diversion lane for all traffic.
Officials said signboards and traffic marshals have been deployed at key points to guide motorists and passengers through the diversions.
Pune Metro officials said the temporary traffic changes were necessary to ensure safe and timely execution of the underground Metro project, which is considered a key public transport corridor connecting the southern parts of the city. They also appealed to commuters to cooperate during the construction period.
