Pune, 24th April 2026: In recognition of her talent and dedication, 15-year-old rhythmic gymnast Shamika Joshi has been selected to represent India at the prestigious European Cup for Rhythmic Gymnastics, scheduled to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from April 30 to May 3, 2026.

As she prepares to compete internationally, financial support from benevolent individuals and organisations will be crucial in enabling her participation without constraints.

Shamika’s selection marks a defining milestone in her burgeoning sporting journey. Renowned for her discipline, elegance, and unwavering dedication, she has consistently showcased excellence, earning her place among athletes representing the country at a global level at a remarkably young age.

This will be her second appearance on the international stage. In June 2025, she represented India at the 3rd FIG Rhythmic Gymnastics Junior World Championship in Bulgaria, where she competed alongside some of the world’s most promising young gymnasts—an experience that further honed her competitive spirit and strengthened her resolve.

However, her journey also brings to light the financial realities that accompany international participation in niche sports. Competing at this level involves significant expenses, including travel, accommodation, specialised training, FIG-approved apparatus, participation fees, and the cost of a coach accompanying the athlete. The total estimated expenditure for the upcoming European Cup stands at approximately Rs 2.9 lakh.

Underscoring this challenge, her mother, Archana Joshi said, “Despite representing the country at a global level, there is currently no government funding support for her participation in this event. This has placed a significant financial burden on our family, and we have been independently supporting her training and international appearances so far.”

Shamika’s journey reflects a larger systemic gap faced by many talented athletes in emerging and less-publicised sports, where international recognition is often not matched by institutional support. As she prepares to once again carry the Indian flag onto the global stage, timely financial assistance could play a pivotal role in allowing her to compete with focus and confidence.

With determination, grace, and the promise of excellence, Shamika Joshi embodies the spirit of a young athlete striving to make her mark, seeking not only recognition but the support necessary to translate potential into podium success.
