Pune: Three-Year-Old Boy Makes Miraculous Recovery After Accidental Pesticide Drinking

Pune, 22nd June 2023: A distressing incident unfolded in Mulshi taluka when a three-year-old son of a farm labourer accidentally ingested pesticide while playing in a field. The severity of the situation became apparent as the child started foaming at the mouth, prompting immediate action.
He was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, where medical professionals assessed his critical condition and recommended transferring him to a larger medical facility. Eventually, the young boy was admitted to Sassoon Hospital in Pune. After undergoing intensive treatment for 23 days, he has made a remarkable recovery and has been discharged, joyfully returning home.
The incident took place in Bhadas village of Mulshi taluka, where the farm labourer couple resides. A few days prior, the father was engrossed in his fieldwork while the child engaged in playful activities nearby. In a moment of curiosity, the child inadvertently placed a pesticide bottle in his mouth. Before long, his distressing condition caught the attention of an observer who noticed the foaming at his mouth and detected the odour of pesticide, leading to the realization that he had consumed something toxic.
In a race against time, the parents rushed the child on a two-wheeler to Paud Hospital, located ten kilometres away from their village. Due to the critical nature of the child’s condition, the attending doctor advised the family to seek treatment at a larger medical facility. Despite facing dire financial circumstances, the determined parents immediately brought the child to Sassoon Hospital, where the medical staff promptly initiated treatment.
The child was initially admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for a period of five to six days before being transferred to the general ward. Finally, after an arduous 23-day journey of medical care and monitoring, the young boy was pronounced fit and discharged from the hospital.
The dedicated team of doctors at Sassoon Hospital, led by Dr Aarti Kinikar, Dr Shalaka Patil, Dr Naresh Sonakwade, Dr Pankaj Kumawat, and Dr Gokul Bavaskar from the Department of Pediatrics, tirelessly attended to the boy’s medical needs, closely monitoring his progress throughout the treatment process. Their expertise guided the treatment decisions, ensuring the best course of action based on the child’s fluctuating condition.
The successful recovery and subsequent return home of the child serve as a testament to the medical team’s commendable efforts and the resilience of the young patient and his family.
