Pune, 11th June 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced that the city will receive water supply on alternate days from June 15 amid concerns over a potentially weak monsoon and dwindling reservoir levels. As part of a series of water conservation measures, the civic body has ordered the closure of public and private vehicle washing centres and directed housing societies with sewage treatment plants (STPs) to keep them operational and use recycled water for gardening, flushing and other non-potable purposes.

The decision follows a review of water availability in the Khadakwasla dam chain, Bhama Askhed dam and Pavana dam in light of the India Meteorological Department’s revised monsoon forecast, which has indicated a high probability of below-normal rainfall this season.

The civic body released a detailed ward-wise schedule for the revised water supply pattern, which will come into effect from Monday. The decision was taken after reviewing water availability in the Khadakwasla dam system, Bhama Askhed dam and Pavana dam, along with forecasts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

PMC officials said only 5.03 TMC of water remains in the Khadakwasla reservoir system, of which around 3 TMC is available for the city’s use. While the current storage is considered adequate for now, the civic body has opted for precautionary rationing to ensure equitable distribution of drinking water until fresh inflows are received.

Under the new restrictions, potable water cannot be used for construction activities, vehicle washing, gardening, swimming pools or other non-essential purposes. Housing societies equipped with STPs have been asked to immediately activate non-functional plants and maximise the reuse of treated wastewater. Hotels, restaurants, hostels and commercial establishments have also been directed to adopt water-saving measures.

The PMC has appealed to citizens to avoid wastage, repair leakages in taps and pipelines, prevent overhead tanks from overflowing and reuse grey water wherever possible. The civic administration has warned of action against unauthorised water connections and said criminal cases could be registered against violators.

Officials said the alternate-day water supply schedule, which will come into effect from Monday, is aimed at ensuring that available water resources last through the monsoon period and that all parts of the city continue to receive drinking water despite uncertainty over rainfall.
