Pune, 2nd November 2022: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will immunise over 11 lakh children to eradicate Japanese encephalitis (JE) from the city. This is the first time in Maharashtra that a vaccination drive against JE has been organised. The PMC is one of three municipal corporations in the state to participate in the immunisation programme.

The civic body will carry out the immunisation programme in both public and private schools. Children between the ages of one and fifteen will be eligible to receive the vaccine as part of this campaign. The vaccination drive will begin with three municipal corporations: Pune, Parbhani, and Raigad. The Central Government has decided to conduct the drive in these three specific cities.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is caused by mosquito-borne Flavivirus. Owing to a lack of immunisation, morbidity and mortality rates are high even today. Hence, this move is a positive one.
