Pune Tops in Mental Health Helpline Calls, Relationship Issues and Anxiety Among Leading Concerns for City Residents
Pune, 17th January 2025: Pune has emerged as a key contributor to mental health discussions, according to data released by Mpower, a mental wellness initiative under the Aditya Birla Education Trust. Marking its 9th anniversary, Mpower shared insights from over 100,000 calls received nationwide through its toll-free mental health helpline, Mpower 1-on-1 Let’s Talk (1800-120-820050).
Pune recorded the highest call volume across India, with a notable trend of increased participation from men—57 percent of callers were male, while 43 percent were female—signaling a shift in the perception of mental health support among men in the city.
The report revealed that relationship challenges account for 32 percent of calls from Pune, followed by anxiety at 26 percent. Experts believe that the city’s fast-paced urban lifestyle, combined with intense academic and professional competition, contributes significantly to these statistics.
“Pune’s emphasis on education and its high-pressure professional ecosystem often take a toll on mental health,” said Dr. Sneha Arya, a psychiatrist at Mpower – The Centre, Pune, based at BK Birla Hospital.
“Accessible mental health resources and early intervention are vital, especially for young adults navigating these challenges. Prioritizing mental well-being can enhance their overall quality of life and productivity.”
Key Insights on Pune’s Mental Health Landscape
- Young Adults Most Affected: Around 51 percent of callers from Pune belong to the 18-25 age group, reflecting the increasing need for mental health support among students and young professionals. This aligns with global data showing the significant impact of undiagnosed mental health conditions on young adults’ well-being and economic contribution.
- Work Stress and Urban Challenges: Factors such as long work hours, tight deadlines, heavy traffic, and limited personal downtime exacerbate stress and anxiety levels in the city.
- Academic Pressure: As an education hub, Pune places substantial academic and social demands on students, often leading to heightened levels of stress and mental health issues.
Over the past nine years, Mpower has made significant strides in promoting mental wellness. It has reached more than 2.1 million individuals through direct interventions and raised awareness among 165 million people nationwide.
