Pune, 22nd August 2025: Pune has emerged as Maharashtra’s frontrunner in the drive to register transgender persons and provide them with official identity certificates, a campaign aimed at ensuring social inclusion and access to government schemes. Jointly spearheaded by the state government and several social organizations, the initiative has gained significant traction through dedicated registration camps and awareness programmes.

According to the Social Welfare Department, Pune received 1,113 applications from transgender persons for official certificates, out of which 973 certificates have already been issued. Additionally, 805 individuals have been added to the electoral rolls, securing their right to vote.

Across Maharashtra, 5,401 applications have been received so far, resulting in 4,504 certificates issued. Of these, 3,625 certificate holders now also hold Aadhaar cards, and 1,260 have received Ayushman Bharat health insurance cards, providing them with access to essential healthcare services.

Thane ranks second in registrations with 883 transgender applicants. Officials attribute Pune’s leading numbers to proactive work by NGOs, local authorities, and extensive awareness efforts through special outreach drives.

“The positive response reflects the growing recognition and dignity being accorded to the transgender community. With identity certificates, Aadhaar, and health insurance, they can now access various government welfare schemes,” said Vishal Londhe, Assistant Commissioner, Social Welfare Department.

Chandni, President of Nirbhaya Sanstha, emphasized that the actual transgender population in Pune is higher and called for a comprehensive survey. “While this is a significant first step, every transgender person must be identified and included in the welfare net,” she said.
